The Ascendant, Descendant, MC and IC are the four important "landmarks" on your secret map. In astrology, they are commonly referred as Angles.
- The sign on your First House cusp is your Ascendant (Rising Sun). It is the point on your secret map that you will find out more about your projected self image and how you "dawn" on people.
- Opposite to your ascendant is your Descendant. The sign on your Seventh House cusp is the point on your secret map that you will discover more about your significant partners whom you share your life journey with.
- The sign on your Fourth House is your Imum Coeli (IC). It is the point on your secret map that you will learn more about the familial roots of your being and the psychological and emotional foundations you have inherited.
- Opposite to your IC is your Medium Coeli (MC or Midheaven). It is the most elevated point on your secret map that represents your highest potential and honor that you can achieve for your public image.
Common mistake in reading the map
If this is the first time you are reading your secret map, don't be disheartened if you feel a little disorientated.
When I first read my natal chart, I assumed that the Midheaven (MC) on the Tenth House cusp is the northern hemisphere. But in actual fact, the northern hemisphere is the lower half hemisphere.
The best way to get our of the confusion is to imagine yourself facing south when you read the map.
The sun rises in the east and move through the twelfth, eleventh, tenth, ninth, eighth, seventh houses before setting on the Descendant. After the sun sets in the west, it will move through the sixth, fifth, fourth, third, second and first house before it rises in the east again.
Although your natal chart is a two-dimensional drawing, it represents the spatial phenomenon of the sky on the day when you were born and the profound astrological wisdom on your universe.
If life is a journey, your natal chart would be the most essential tool that you can possess to help you navigate both your inner and outer terrains.
