The key question that most people ask when reading a map is: "Where am I?"
When I first looked at my own natal chart, I was very fascinated by the signs and symbols and I was very eager to find out more about their meanings.
Apart from the signs and symbols, I also see lines that divide the whole circle into pies numbered 1 to 12. I felt a little disorientated because I don't know where I am on the secret map!
In this article, we learn how to get a good orientation of your secret map so that you can familiar yourselves with the directions on your natal chart.
| When you look at the natal chart, you have to imagine that the center of the chart is the position of the Earth and you are observing the placements of the planets in the sky from where you were born. Your natal chart is a 2 dimensional diagram that shows the positions of planets and zodiac signs at your date, time and city of birth (represented by astrological glyphs). |
Horizontal Line
The horizontal line that runs through the center of the circle divides the chart into 2 hemispheres.
- The lower half of the chart is known as the Northern Hemisphere (House 1-6). These six houses represent the invisible portion of the sky and relate to your personal side of your life, such as personal identity, resources, communication style, home, creativity, health and work responsibilities.
- The upper half of the chart is known as the Southern Hemisphere (House 7-12). These six houses represent the visible portion of the sky and relate to the social side of your life and the world outside of your personal life, such as your relationships, shared resources, social beliefs, reputation, goals and spirituality.
The left end of the horizon is the east horizon where the sun rises (Ascendant) and the right end of the horizon is the western point where the sun sets (Descendant).
Vertical Line
The vertical line (Meridian) that runs through the center of the circle divides the chart into Eastern and Western hemisphere.
- The left-hand side of the chart is known as the Eastern Hemisphere (House 10-3). This area of your chart represents the proactive side of you. If you find the majority of your planets in this area of your chart, you are more likely to take initiatives and actions.
- The right-hand side of the chart is known as the Western Hemisphere (House 4-9). This area of your chart represents the responsive side of you. If you find the majority of your planets in this area of your chart, you are more likely to wait for opportunities and respond to circumstances.
The top of the vertical line is where the sun reaches the highest point (MC or Midheaven) and the bottom of the vertical line is where you find the sun at midnight (IC).
